Jordan Downing has been a major talent since he stepped on Hopewell's campus nearly four years ago. But this season, the 6-foot-5 senior forward has been even better. Downing, who will play for Davidson next season, is averaging 17 points and five rebounds per game for the 13-0 Titans, who are No. 1 in the CSG Top 10 and No. 2 in the state.

Downing helped lead Hopewell to a second straight Bojangles Shootout title last week with victories over Charlotte Christian, Ardrey Kell and Victory Christian on the way to the tournament championship.

Downing who has started since his sophomore year has now been a part of the Titans winning 42 of their last 43 games.

Downing has been a standout all season, with his best game coming against Wake Forest signee, West Charlotte guard J.T. Terrell, when he scored 31 points.

"Jordan has been making big shot and making big plays since he got here," Hopewell coach Eric Davis said. "But this year, his senior, I think he has a chance to do even more."

Christian LeMay has passed nearly every test this season, leading his Butler squad to a perfect 13-0 record and a berth in the 4AA state semifinals against Independence.

LeMay, who has been offered by nearly every Division I school including No. 1 Florida and No. 2,  will need his best for last as the junior quarterback will have to beat the Patriots again this Friday to get a shot at the Bulldogs' first state championship in school history.

LeMay, CSG's Athlete of the Week (Nov. 30), passed for 344 yards and three touchdowns in the last week's 58-8 win over East Meck.  LeMay, who guided Butler to a 31-24 victory at Independence earlier this month, now has passed for over 2,900 yards and 43 touchdowns this season.

Anthony Carrothers is used to winning. The Independence senior quarterback has guided his team to 37-5 record in his three years as a starter. But Carrothers still has one thing he wants to add to his resume: a state championship.

“We want to win it all and we’re thinking about that,” Carrothers said, after the Patriots beat East Forsyth 56-14 in the first round of the 4A playoffs. “But right now, we got to take it one step at a time to get to our (ultimate) goal.”

Carrothers was in championship form last Friday when he passed 281 yards and two touchdowns and ran for 38 yards and two more scores. Carrothers, Charlotte Sports Group’s Athlete of the Week, has now has passed for 3,102 yards and 30 touchdowns on the season.

“We are as good as Anthony Carrothers can be,” Independence football coach Tom Knotts said. “When (Anthony) is on, he is as good as player in the state.”

Carrothers, who has also rushed for over 500 yard and 15 scores this season, will need to be at his best this week, when Independence travels to Mallard Creek for their second round playoff game. The Patriots beat Mallard Creek 42-41 in week one this year, when the Mavericks failed to convert a two-point conversion on the last play of the game.

“We feel like that game was a little bit of a fluke,” Carrothers said. “It should have never been that close, but now we have to go out and prove it.”
