| Parents dole out cash for kids' football highlight reels |

CHARLOTTE – Some Charlotte High School football parents are turning from home videos to professionals to film their children's highlights on the field. The service is proof of a rapidly changing and increasingly competitive world of college recruiting. “Parents have to be proactive today in that process unless your son is a blue chip recruit that everybody knows about,” said Joe Canty, who runs Charlotte Sports Group, a production company that shoots, cuts and packages highlight videos for a dozen area football players. Parent Arch McIntosh said hiring Canty gives his son, a senior defensive end, invaluable exposure at schools across the country. “It makes a difference in the calls and letters, I can tell you,” he said. “It makes a huge difference., the quality of the video is just outstanding.” Canty's high school highlight reels are also posted on Youtube.com, giving player a chance to be the next hit video. “Tom Brady is a prime example,” parent Charles Arbuckle said. “He was a sixth round pick, but no schools wanted him except Michigan off his highlight tape.” |
