Athlete of the week Charlotte Sports Group – Athlete of the Week/January 11, 2009 By Jay Edwards, Charlotte Sports Group Jordan Downing has been a major talent since he stepped on Hopewell's campus nearly four years ago. But this season, the 6-foot-5 senior forward has been even better. Downing, who will play for Davidson next season, is averaging 17 points and five rebounds per game for the 13-0 Titans, who are No. 1 in the CSG Top 10 and No. 2 in the state.Downing helped lead Hopewell to a second straight Bojangles Shootout title last week with victories over Charlotte Christian, Ardrey Kell and Victory Christian on the way to the tournament championship. Downing who has started since his sophomore year has now been a part of the Titans winning 42 of their last 43 games. Downing has been a standout all season, with his best game coming against Wake Forest signee, West Charlotte guard J.T. Terrell, when he scored 31 points. "Jordan has been making big shot and making big plays since he got here," Hopewell coach Eric Davis said. "But this year, his senior, I think he has a chance to do even more."
