Charlotte Sports Group’s Athletes of the MonthMale and Female Athletes of the Month – March 2010 By Jay Edwards Every season in virtually every sport, the Charlotte area produces some of the nation’s top prospects and talent. While many standouts have already committed to colleges for their future athletic careers, Charlotte Sports Group (CSG) would also like to highlight some of the players who are still making the climb to an elite status in their respective sports. At CSG, our main focus is to promote student-athletes in highlight videos, made by our staff, in order to help them gain exposure with college coaches and programs to further their athletic career on the next level. To help further that cause, we will honor an “Athlete on the Month,” (every month) on our website to help recognize the young men and women (Male/Female award) who are making names for themselves in sports now and in the future. March Winners Braxton Ogbueze, Vance – March Male Athlete on the RiseAt the beginning of this basketball season, Braxton Ogbueze was a solid player on a strong Vance team that was hoping to recover from the loss of two of their best players in point guard Darryl Tranyham (Moved back to Maryland) and shooting guard Jacoby Davis (transferred to West Charlotte). Most experts were expecting highly-touted point guard Marquis Rankin to have to do a lot for his veteran team, who was a major factor in the ME-CA 7 conference and the 4A state playoffs. There weren’t many people thinking about 6-foot sophomore Braxton Ogbueze. Ogbueze had been a solid reserve in his freshman season, spelling Davis, Rankin and Tranyham, and showing potential. But, no expected what would happen. Ogbueze not only good better, but he also became one of the elite players in Charlotte, averaging 20 points, 3.5 rebound and 2.3 assists as Vance again was one of the top teams in the area. Ogbueze, who also boasts a 3.5 grade-point average, has scholarship offers already from South Carolina, Virginia and Wake Forest.Ogbueze and Rankin (Wake Forest and South Carolina target) will be back again next season, to prove that they are not only two of the best players in Charlotte, but also can lead their team to new heights.Gigi Bailey, Charlotte Christian – March Female Athlete on the RiseGigi Bailey entered the 2009-10 basketball season as a virtual unknown freshman on a Charlotte Christian team that had struggled the last several years to even post a winning record. She ended the 2010 campaign as one of the top players in Charlotte, earning all-conference (CISAA) and all-state honors. Bailey, a 6-foot-4 freshman, not only led her team with 17.6 points, 10.5 rebounds and 4.9 blocks per game, but also took the Knights within two points of a chance to play in the state championship game.Bailey was the driving force behind her Charlotte Christian team, who finished 20-8, 13 more wins than a year ago, before losing to Hickory Grove Christian 35-33 in the state semifinals.Bailey, who is already being recruited by dozens of college teams, not only had double-double in her first game of the year (18 points, 10 rebounds, nine blocks vs. Covenant Day), but also had a triple-double against Marvin Ridge in only the third game (11 pts., 11 reb., 10 blocks). The freshman eclipsed 20 points 11 different times, and scored over 30 points, twice.Bailey, who had five triple-doubles on the year, will no doubt be one of the top players in the state next season, which will only be her sophomore campaign. |
